Charles Levi Tice, 84, of Newton, died Monday, January 7, 2019, at Newton Medical Center.

Born in Franklin, Charles lived in Hamilton Township and Branchville for a short period of time, but lived in Newton for most of his life, residing in the 1770 House on Dunn Place for many years. A 1952 graduate of Newton High School, he received an honorary degree from Sussex County Community College. He was United States Army veteran, proudly serving during the Korean Conflict. Charles began his career at Selective Insurance Company in 1952 and continued to progress to greater levels of corporate responsibility. In 1980, he was promoted to a senior officer position and retired as Senior Vice-President/Treasurer/Chief Investment Officer in 1993.

Charles was an honoree for the Newton High School Pride Foundation. He also received several awards and honors for his philanthropic efforts to improve the quality of life in Newton as well as for his involvement in and dedication to the Sussex County community. Charles was a founding member and member (Emeritus) of the Trustee Board of the Sussex County Community College, where he was a former Treasurer and Board Chair; a former member and Vice-Chairman of the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges, where he was awarded lifetime membership; a former member and Chairman of the Sussex County Red Cross; a former member of the Sussex County Historical Preservation Committee, where he served as the first Chairman; a former Chairman and board member of High Point Financial; a former board member of Lakeland Bank; a member (Emeritus) of Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation Board; a member (Emeritus) of the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, where he also served as Treasurer and Vice-Chairman of the Board; a former Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bristol Glen Community; and a former board member of Newton Cemetery, where he served as Secretary/Treasurer. Charles was an active and longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton, where he had served as a former Trustee and Treasurer, and was a longtime member of Newton Country Club. He was also a former board member of OTC, Washington, DC.

The son of the late Harry W. and Dora (nee Stewart) Tice, Charles was predeceased by his loving wife, Gale A. (nee Talmadge) Tice, on December 17, 1991. He is survived by his son, W. Martin Taylor and wife, Geraldine (Geri), of Hockessin, Delaware; his daughter, V. LeeAnn Hyde and husband, Bruce, of Chester; and his grandchildren, Brian and Lindsey. He is also survived by his beloved friend, Angela Woods.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church, 111 Ryerson Avenue, Newton. Interment will follow in Newton Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
